Hey all!

I recently acquired a beautiful Dark Blue 2016 PIU with 36k miles on it. The agency that purchased it originally over ordered and sent it to the auction with delivery miles and was purchased by a civilian and had an easy non-LEO life.

Unfortunately for me, its a non-sync vehicle and i'd really like the sync options. My largest client is a chain of auto salvage yards so I have access to wholesale parts but am unsure if its possible upgrade a non-sync vehicle to sync via parts replacement.

If it helps, my VIN is 1FM5K8AR0GGC44787 if that helps anyone with access look anything up.

I was willing to upgrade the radio to something aftermarket with bluetooth cell phone control (the main reason I want sync) but my research and the local stereo shops confirm nothing seems to be available.

Thanks in advance for your help. I've already ordered the teardrop spotlight (LED), Setina PB400, key fobs, remote start parts, auto headlight parts, and would really like to make the sync work!

I don't know if it's any consolation, but my 2017 does have Sync, and it's not like it does much, unlike Sync 3 on retail vehicles. Essentially it's just Bluetooth and media play off your phone. You can do the latter through USB and the former through a visor-mount Bluetooth speaker for under $50 without having to tear anything apart.

Yeah... The 2 items you mentioned are what i really want it for and I dont mind ripping things apart if it will work but I fear your solution may be the one I end up with.

Thanks for both replies!

Now, what you COULD do is install this integrated module that will interface with all sorts of things (laptops, tablets, video feeds etc) with or without sync. That price though...

Wow. Thats pretty amazing looking but wow... that price ;-)

It also seems to require Sync in some way to function fully but given its price I think I will look at other options first!

Thanks - I'll look at this one as it was more in line with the solution I was looking for. Most of of the total center stack replacement w/ android OS kits lost use of of the factory back up camera and required use of their aftermarket one, which I didnt want to do. I see they offer a backup cam during my quick read but didnt see if they specifically say you need to replace yours.

There are two versions, one for Sync, one for no-Sync, but yeah, at nearly four grand, it ought to make you coffee, never mind do sync stuff...

Any updates on screen options? That Android screen still looks like a good alternative. Mine has the standard Sync option installed

Contact (call if necessary to ask) www.4dtech.com , if the upgrade is available, they will have it, and it will be using OEM Ford parts..

I've been lurking for a few months on this same topic...but also have the same confusion as OP...

Ford Sync is completely new to me, but given that I have a 2014 PIU, it has the MyFord deck...so no Sync. What I don't get...what is involved in adding Ford Sync? I see modules online for a few hundred...if it's just an extra module that gives me a few OEM functions that I can drop in when I put in one of those huge Android decks, definitely in for it...

There just doesn't seem to be clear details on all this...or maybe I'm just so incredibly late to Ford Sync that I lack any sort of knowledge...

It depends on who you ask, some say it's not doable at all, some say it's doable, but with considerable glutal discomfort. My opinion is that you're better off with an aftermarket Bluetooth system. Sync functionality on the PIU is pretty basic, at any rate nothing an aftermarket system couldn't do cheaper and easier.

Not sure if this will provide any insight? Adding Sync to base explorer

Thanks Peter, this helped crush my plans / expectations, haha. Appreciate the reply, and all I've seen you posting around as I've lurked.

Ya, thanks for this too. I'd even contacted a few vendor I've seen posted around, 4D Tech as an example. All in all, it really does seem pointless vs just accepting the differences of an aftermarket system.

Just signed the papers for my 2017 PIU an hour ago. But this morning I called Infotainment, gave them my vin and they asked their Ford specialist and I got confirmation that this will work with PIUs. Pricey, but it's plug & play. I forget what their specialist said, but he said as long as it has "something", which my PIU does, then it will work. I'll order one as soon as I gain enough courage to shell out some more money 😖 and give an update.
