I am letting everyone know that if you take your 2016 Explorer in and request the dealer to change the tire size in IDS (say your going from P255/50 R20 to P245/55 R18 for winter), IDS is changing the wrong information and your PCM will throw an error code (no CEL though).

I am currently dealing with this and after enough research I am confident this is the case. Ford needs to correct the software!!!! Maybe a dealer can help out getting this corrected.

What's the reason or need to change tire size in IDS?

Speedometer correction and also the ABS module wants to know the size.

If you run the compatible sizes in 20 vs 18, there is no speedometer correction.

I hope everyone is aware of how to check sizes against OEM sizes for speedometer accurancy. Plenty of websites out there that do that.

But if you go with an OEM size its right in IDS....if it works properly.

16 Explorer Tire Sizes are:

265/45R20
255/20R20
245/50R20
245/60R18
245/55R18

IDS will report a "?" for your tire size (BCM) as it is setup incorrectly. Changing it will cause IDS to change the wrong item in the BCM as well.

The ABS side of the tire size is just 18" or 20" and works properly.

I wanted to switch from 255/50R20 to 245/55R18.

I ended up going back to the original data (255/50R20) for the BCM side of the tire size programming and changed the ABS to 18". Comparing to GPS I am within 1 MPH of actual speed so I will call it good for now.

Bottom line is IDS is messed up....not the first error I have seen and won't be the last.

My OEM size is 255/45R20 and for Winter I'm using 235/60R18 tires.
The diameter variance is 0.23% which means that when the speedo reads 100 kph (62.14 mph) I'm actually going 100.23 kph (62.28 mph). I don't think there is a need to change anything in the vehicle setup in this case but I agree that most owners don't take other factors into consideration when changing wheel sizes, especially those that exceed the accepted 3% diameter variance.

Jason, is this an issue just with the 2016 model set up in IDS or have you checked others?

Woudn't know unless I have the vehicle to hook up to. BTW for the comparison chart these are the results OEM to Winter Size

20 mph
19.1

30 mph
28.6

40 mph
38.1

50 mph
47.7

60 mph
57.2

70 mph
66.7

80 mph
76.3

90 mph
85.8

HOWEVER with no changes I was 5 MPH off on in the 30 MPH range and 10 off in the 65 MPH range before making changes in IDS.
