2017 Ford Explorer Sport issues already

Picked up my 2016 Sport Feb 1st 2016. Have just about 30k on it now and it's been back to the dealer 3 times. Once on a flatbed and twice I dropped it off.

-16k miles I had a full transmission failure
-20k miles I had the airbag light which means your airbags aren't functional
-26k I finally had the popping noise in the front end fixed

Knock on wood, the truck has been running great since. My only other complaint would be Ford's transmission programming. The truck shifts all over the place and I get the clunk hard shift sometimes. Not impressed with the transmission in the truck at all.

Unbelievable! Picked up the car yesterday and took it back in today for same reason. Now they are looking to find out if there is something electrical that's causing the starter to fail. Ford is reviewing my case and they will get back to me.

Hi all,

I have had the truck since December and 2,500 miles and had 2 small annoying issues and a big one with it. First, the driver side front door started to squeak - nothing big, but annoying to have this in the first month of ownership.
Second - the starter and the battery were replaced after a big scare - smoke started to come out from the engine bay.
Third - a piece of trim from the ride side of the entertainment/nav screen is loose. I am scheduled this week to get it fixed.

Am I paranoid that I am expecting to much from a $50k brand new vehicle. This is a lease that I planed to purchase and pass down to my wife, but if this continues I do not think I can trust the vehicle.

How are your 5th gen holding up?
See my recent post "Lemon Law? List of my problems". My 2014 sport has been a disaster since day one. I also had that annoying door hinge issue you have...and a whole list of other major problems including 4 repair jobs each amounting to $2000ea.

My advise. Go back to your dealer and buy the top tier ford platinum warranty covering the duration you plan to keep this vehicle or a time span when you've past the depreciation curve and can get out of it with minimal loses. Bite the bullet and pay the warranty...it's cheaper if you're the original owner and the younger the car is. The more you drive around the more that warranty package cost but there is "grace period" where the price of the warranty is the same as if you bought it at the same time as the vehicle so do this asap.
Trust me, I went into this thing really liking the Explorer sport. I put money down and did 4year finance to own it right out so I could pass it to my wife in preparation for her coming due for a better vehicle and then keep it in the family for that 10-15yr lifetime.
This turned out to be a piece of junk. Put it this way, my wife currently drives our 2005 Honda Pilot which we've had since new and is now going on 13yrs old and 265,000km. Starts up and drives like the day it was new. Been in the shop only a couple times for minor issues compared to this 3.5yr old explorer. 4x older yet 1/10th the amount of problems and cost...oh, and it also has 1/100th less rust on it as well.

I took your advice, luckily. I bought the 2017 Sport new and got a 10 year extended warranty. Cost me $2900 Canadian. And because I bought the warranty, they gave me a good car that won't break down. Zero problems so far and loving it (after 9 months and 8000km).

It is a little different. I leased the vehicle. The dealership said that if Ford will not do anything, they are willing to work with me to get out of the vehicle. I hate playing the waiting game.

Latest update: the dealership has no idea what is wrong with the vehicle and they are waiting for Ford to assist. They do not know why the starter is failing. Ford suggested that a wire might be corroded (on a 5,500 mile car?) or pinched due to faulty assembly. Needless to say I am growing impatient with the whole thing. Ford Customer Service still needs to call me back (most likely after the car is fixed) to tell me what they have decided regarding my case. So, for the 6 months I had the vehicle, this is the 3rd week that the car was in the shop - 4 days first time, 4 days last week and now since Friday. I so want to be out of the car as much as I like it.
Thank you for reading my posts.

I've had parking sensor failures and my drivetrain wouldn't know what the word "smooth" meant if you read it the definition. This thing clunks, slams, revs, whatever the hell it wants. 3 dealerships have checked it and tell me it's fine. Otherwise, it's fairly solid.

what motor do you have in yours?? I am starting to have issues with clunking with the tranny.....
