Vehicle has less than 2000 miles on it, stock 3.3L n/a V6. It sound like my old Crown Vic from years past. Definitely pinging under llight oad at low RMP, such as light throttle on a hill lugging at under 2000RPM or moderate acceleration straight line. Using 87 octane gas...do these vehicles require higher octane? I wouldn't expect a brand new Ford to ping, but not familiar with how the PIU ECU is programmed.

Not familiar with the PIU, but the manual generally describes 87 octane for all engine series. Modern ECU's typically have octane tables that will adjust ignition timing, fueling, etc based on current octane in the tank. My experience is that my vehicle runs better on higher octane. On your next fill up, try higher octane and see if the issue is resolved.

Try switching gas stations.
