1998 Ford Explorer XL 4WD
I am new to the forum, although I have viewed before to acquire information, this is my first post. Anyways. I recently bought a 98' Explorer XL. It seems to me that the tires are under sized for a 4WD at 235/70R15. Do you think increasing to 255/70R16 would fit without rubbing any? How would it effect my performance? Thank you in advance.

255 70/16 is the stock size on my 98 Eddie. Unless they made two tire sizes for the 98 model year you should be good with that size tire.

It might have come with either 235/R75/15" or 255/7r5/16" wheels. I have 2000's and 2001's and some have 15" and some have 16" inch wheels. I guess it was an option or perhaps it was part of the towing pkg.

Check the door pillar sticker for OEM size for your vehicle or use the Ford Etis link provided.
Staying close to the stock tire diameter will keep the gearing and speedometer accurate.

Do NOT use the tire pressure on the sticker if it says 26 PSI, most here say between 30 to 36 PSI is optimal.

Tire Diameters:

235/75-R-15 28.88 inches

255/70-R-16 30.05 ", or 4% bigger. Speedometer/Odometer off 4 mph 100, or 2 mph at 50, not too great a difference.
