Quick and to the point:

2000 Ranger 2.5 w/ 4r44e

199k (April 2014) Rebuilt due to coast clutch steels/clutches friction welding together (forgot to back off OD band when adjusted, stupid mistake)
New TC, clutches, steels, bands, servos, seals, fluid, USED overdrive planetary and drum.

255k (Aug 2018) Front Sprag flipped/broke. Replaced sprag (Borg warner new) , centershaft (holds sprag)(used) and planetary (used)

300k (Past week) Pulled out of driveway heard pop. Would barely move in gears until put into manual 1st or 2nd. Textbook sprag failure again.

Is the early failure most likely the usage of USED parts that might have already been worn or is there something else I need to look for?

This time I'm going to go for a new planetary set (inner race for sprag) if that can be found. Don't know if a center shaft needs to be replaced as the sprag is stationary in it.

Extra credit question: which is harder? planetary race or the sprag teeth? Which are more likely to wear first?

spray failure somewhat common on high power applications, but the 2.5 doesnt put monster power out, and is not commonly a burnout machine, lol. did you rebuild with 4r55e internals? or eye for eye? id lean toward the used planetary maybe causing it to fail early, depending on the condition of them. i dont think the center shaft would need replaced unless there is abnormal wear etc, but depending on price, may be worth it idk. im pretty sure spray teeth would wear first of the two.

im pretty sure, not a trans guru, but thats my knowledge
