How hard would it be to modify a 2wd 5r55s to be used in a 4wd?

My '03 4wd Explorer has a bad transmission. I found an '03 from a 2wd Explorer. Can I unbolt the tail housing from the good 2wd tranny, and the tail housing from the bad 4wd tranny, swap the 4wd housing, and be back on the road?

I don't want to dig into the transmission itself, just swap a the bolt-on housings.

Can this be done?

No not that easy, the output shaft of the tranny has to be swapped too. This means a complete disassembly of the tranny to get to a snap ring deep in the bottom of the case.

James that sounds just like converting a 5R55E, I was wondering if the 5R55S was the same.

Thank you!!! You just saved me a TON of work!!! I'll be a little more patient and find the correct transmission.

Yes it pretty much assembled the same way, even the parts are similar.

Ford used this type of gear train that uses the small snap ring at the rear ring gear in many of their transmissions.
