2016 Explorer Sport 401A
Hi,
I am a new member who just signed in but i have been reading posts in this forum for a while now. Very helpful information provided here.

I picked up my 2016 ford explorer sport less than a week ago and i noticed 3 things that i would like to share with all of you and hopefully you can give me some feedback.

1. When driving my explorer with the drivers side window down at around 20-35 mph, i heard a whistling noise coming from the driver side mirror. Now this noise is loud enough to be heard and to be annoying. I read a thread in this forum about the same exact noise happening on older models especially the 2014 explorer but there was no mention of anything like it of the 2016 models. Does anyone have that issue on their explorer.

2. I also noticed a popping sound under foot floor board driver side whenever I first start the vehicle from rest and move forward (easy my way out) to about 7-10 miles per hour. POP only happens once and does not happen anytime after or while driving, it only happens when i shut off the engine turn it back on and move forward.
I could not find any reference to this issue in this forum but i figured that you will need to be paying attention to hear that. Anyone facing this as well.

3. This is the infamous fan winding down noise, that has been discussed and well documented in this forum and that Ford has no solution for as of yet.

I have dropped my explorer at the dealership and will update you about the findings. I have always been a ford guy myself, i own a 2001 explorer and a 2008 edge limited and i love both of them. I also love my new explorer but it is frustrating when these issues happen to a brand new car.

Just got a call back from the dealership, they ordered new fan assembly to replace the one I have, they said that they did replace a few of these on 2016 explorers and this should solve the fan noise when winding down. I would not hold my breath for it.
They are also waiting on Ford tech line to approve a mirror replacement before they can order the part. Lets hope this will solve the whistling noise.
For the Pop sound, they said that it is normal and it happens in every explorer something about the ABS module getting initiated. I asked them to drive another explorer myself from the lot to see if it happens. I will let keep everyone posted.

A brand new truck less than a week old and already with these many problems, I really do not mind as long as the it is fixed but Ford should be proactive and start issuing TSBs to fix these.

Sounds like they're making a concerted effort to resolve your complaints. Hopefully their efforts are fruitful.

Unfortunately, that's not how TSB's work. They are issued to assist techs by providing diagnostic and repair procedures for issues that have become popular. And just because a bulletin mentions a potential problem with your model, that doesn't mean the issue necessarily will develop in your particular vehicle. Often a specific glitch shows up on only a specified portion of the production run, on vehicles driven in certain parts of the country, or under certain conditions. What you're asking for is a recall and it is just entirely not feasible to ask a manufacturer to issue a recall for every little issue that could possibly arise. I shudder to think how much we would have to pay for a car if that were to happen.

The pop is the ASB initializing and checking the system. I thought it was the strangest thing since I've never had a vehicle do it before. Fan assembly is a pretty common issue. Although mine has only done it once since owning it.

as stated, #2 is normal, self check/intializing...

So you only have 2 problems and seems they are being addressed.

Honestly, I'm surprised they are "replacing" the fan... they are electric fans and will run/spin down when shutting off the engine. Our VW will run the fan for upwards of 5-10 minutes after shutoff again, per design.

My 16 Sport is also suffering from the noisy whining/squealing fan issue and can be heard while driving also.
Not a major issue and had already been noted, but I opted not to have it replaced yet, as most users here that had there's replaced; ended up with the squealing again.

i've never heard the fan while driving, that's a whole 'nother issue. :)

I had the fan assembly replaced yesterday, the service manager said that ford issued new part numbers for this assembly. so far, I have no more winding squeaking noise. I will keep an eye (or an ear) on it and will let you know.

In regards to the whistling mirror, the dealership had to reorder it as they got the passenger side mirror instead of the driver side. They said it was a cataloging number issue where both mirrors had the same number on the catalogue. I do not know how correct is that but the new mirror will be in on Saturday. I am hoping the replacement will be whistle free.

Did the new number appear on the invoice by chance? I realize it was a warranty job but hoping they identified the part.

I'd love to know if you could post up the updated part number on the fan. It would be much appreciated.

I know my last warranty invoice listed all parts including part numbers including pricing.

Hi,
Update on the new fan assembly, so far no more noise while the fans are winding down just one click sound when the fans come to a complete stop. I figured that is normal.
I am going back to the dealership to get the mirror changed. Once I do that and get the invoice from them I will check for the part number on the fan assembly.

One more thing that I noticed that has nothing to do with the above is the sync screen gets stuck on the phone mode everytime I put the car in reverse and back in drive. If I push the home or setting or info on the screen nothing happens. I have to push climate or entertainment and everything goes back to normal then I can push home and it works.

I have the exact same issue with the MFT being stuck in the phone quadrant after reverse and going to drive.
I'm sure a simple solution to disconnect the negative battery cable would reset it (but not a major issue yet).

Hey guys!

Please bring this up to your dealers the next time you're there so they can diagnose and correct it.

Hi Rebecca,
I just left the dealer now, I showed them this issue and they put the car to check if there are any updates for the MFT, they said I was running the latest version and they have no idea why this is happening. They stated that they will put in a call to Ford to see what they say and will let me know. I guess I will be waiting for Ford to call them back

Hi Peter,
I just got the invoice and the part number is DB5Z-8C607-C
Description is cooling fan assembly.

The reason, I went to them today is that they called me and said the mirror is in. They replaced the mirror but the noise did not go away. They ended up putting some silicon in the gap between the back mirror cap and the plastic of the mirror and so far no noise. I will try to get a picture in as soon as I can.
