I've been rethinking selling the explorer in a year, I might just make it more custom :)
so...
Is it possible to swap a 347 into my 1996 ohv?
4wd xlt if that matters...

You'll need a custom programmed computer and will want all the accessories from a 5.0 Explorer. But basically it's the same as a 302 swap since a 347 is just a bored and stroked 302.

k, so if i search for 5.0 swaps into 4.0... i should be able to get an idea of the cost/time/difficulty?

piss.. the only swap threads are 1st gen, why can't i find any 2nd gen engine swaps???

Because no one has done it as far as I can tell. I ran into the same problem when trying to reserch this. I also planon swapping in a 302 into my Sport. I'm going to rebuild the engine to take a SC and nitrous. I'm going to use forged crank, rods, and pistons. These will be from a stroker kit so it'll be a 347. I'm going to get a custom chip from Superchips to handle the mods. I'm going to find another 99 Explorer with the V8 and use the engine, wiring harness, and computer. The motor should bolt in easily, and the harness should be easy to connect.

I'm still working out the details, so nothing concrete yet.

The Ford Racing crate motors have from 320-345 hp. I should be able to beat this with a stroked 302. Throw in a SC and I should be able to reach 400 hp easily. Add in a 150 shot of nitrous when needed and it should move a bit.

As I do more research on the swap I'll post it here in the "Under the Hood" forum. And of course, I'll have plenty of pics to post once it starts.

Great, let me know when you have some more info, i'll probably be doing this in 6 months to a year... but i still need to know how hard it would be to see if it is the right way to go

why not ask troll or blk? they have the 347 in their 96.

troll was a V8 to begin with. there was no motor swap.

it is all the same dude. no big deel it is all the same chassi. that means the only difrent part is in changing the engine control harness and trans harness the rest is all the same. btw there are more then one newer style swaps out there and a lot of older ones the new ones are easier BTW.

newer style swaps? do you have a link to a post or page that would talk a lil bit about one?

i've done almost all the bolt on type stuff, i lowered it myself... and i've got a guy at a shop who could help me if i really needed it. i think that this summer I might be able to tackle an engine swap...

psychotic,

I have a 99 4x4 XLT and have almost completed my 302/AWD conversion. I considered the 347 but decided to go w/ the basic 302 for now and maybe build a 347 over summer.

I got the motor/ tranny/ t-case/ harness and computer from a 2000 XLT. You will also need a few other parts such as radiator, rear driveshaft, motor mounts, throttle cable, cruise control cable, power steerint line, exhaust (if you don't go custom), fuel lines, tranny cooler lines........and probably some stuff i'm forgetting.

You will also have to get a new set of keys made from ford, they cannot make the new computer accept you old keys........the theft system will disable the engine.

As far as time.......mine took alot longer then it should have (about 5 months) only because my SOHC motor blew (rods went through block) and it took me a while to find the parts. I also got the work done at a friends shop so they treated like a project car. You will have to take it to a dealer after to get the keys done. Mine is there now getting a few problems worked out.

The cost of the swap can build up VERY quickly. I would recommed finding a whole donor vehicle as it's a lot easier......some of the hoses/lines cost over $100. i have spent WELL over $5000 but it does give you chance to install some "little goodies" in the motor, as i did (more info when it's complete).

Overall it's not that difficult if you/ or the tech know what they are doing......just don't expect much help from ANY ford dealerships, when i told them they looked at me as if i was crazy.......and just a tip ALWAYS go to the dealer and order parts in person, that way you can look and see what you are getting, they won't have most of the stuff in stock.

DocVijay - a 302 in a sport would be insane!......you would need the same stuff, but i don't know if the driveshaft would work.

i have lots of other info, so if you need to just e-mail me - C280hothi@hotmail.com.....i will do a full write up when the damn thing is finally complete......i can't wait to post pics and mods!!!

Insane is what I want! It'll be fun on 4 wheels.

Also, I'm going to be doing a 4WD conversion at the same time, so I'm going to get some heavier duty driveshafts built.

Please post your write up. That would be great. I'm sure I'll be e-mailing you for tips once I get started.

My dad does not think a 347 will fit into the engine bay of the explorer. According to him, when we got out explorer, we couldn't get the v8 because it wasn't available at that time (because it wouldn't fit). I know some at least some 96 explorers came with a v8, and i don't think ford would redesign anything mid-year. does anyone know if this makes sense?

I'm sorry, but he doesn't know what he's talking about.

The 91-94 Explorers were not available with a V8. That's why it's harder for them to swap. The 95 and up Explorers did come with a V8 option, so they all can take one. The 347 and 302 are the exact same size, just in case you weren't sure. The 347 just uses different rods pistons, and crank to give more displacement. The Explorer can take the 302, but not hte newerr 4.6L engines, they are too wide and would take lots of frame modification to make them fit.

I already knew that he didn't know what hes talking about... I had to explain to him 3 times that the back breaks were not drums, but rotors. I was just seeing if there was anything i should be worried about with his warning.

actually the v8 was offered from 96 on

Yes, you're right. Wasn't thinking. I forgot that 95 was the odd year where it was the newer X w/o the V8.

Would my donor vehicle need to be a 96?? How much do you think a wrecked Ex with working tranny and engine would cost?
