Driving home a few weeks ago when the truck started driving like crap. Replaced everything I could with out pulling the motor. Took it to Ford they said they couldn't figure it out after the $120 test, but they could send it to the engine guy for around $2,000... So instead it is getting a V8 upgrade!

Already have:
Donor 4.6 V8- $300
Replacement PI heads- $150
Port and Polish+Valves- $532
4R70W Transmission- $100
Wiring Harness- $100
3 Inch Exhaust- $150
Total- $1,332

Not too bad...
Eventually I would like to do cams, and a supercharger. But for now I will sit close to 300hp. Shouldn't get too bored with that.

If any one has any suggestions or things to look out for, I am always looking for other opinions.

The donor 4.6. I swapped the heads at a junk yard for The PI's. They are currently off at the machine shop getting ported and a valve job!

4.6 engines are rather large and for this reason they present packaging problems. Overhead cams take up a lot of space. Also check on the availability of an oil pan. My little 302 is extraordinarily tight in my AWD 99 explorer. Good Luck!!

The 2002-2004 have a wider frame so it should be no issue since the 02 came with a 4.6 v8 from the factory

The engine and transmission will go in easy enough. The real pain in the ass is going to come from the wiring and electronics...

Me likey... subscribing.

Been wanting to do this with a 5.4l ...... subscribing

We shall see how it goes. I have heard contradicting stories on if the the 5r55 transmission will match up, or if I need to go find a 4r70w... I would know if I pulled the engine, but I need garage space first. Little brother thought it was a good idea to put a Mercedes diesel in to his Jeep.

Some work that has been done so far, and some thing to be done while all of the other work is being done.

My buddy has a 2002 4.0 he's toying with doing a swap into...
I've got him sold on the ecoboost but its hard to find pcm etc...
Definately want to see how this goes(wiring especially)

I've kicked the idea of a 5.0L or 5.4L around a bit... After my 3" BL there is SO much more space under the hood now. Just makes sense to jam a bigger engine in there :D

Heads will be done Monday! The real fun will follow that afternoon! I'll Make sure to take pictures and document the process. I have gone through 150 pages of forums which is almost 3000, forums. NOt a single person has finished a swap so far... So I am pretty sure people are curios to know how this ends up going.
