4.0 runs ruff and dies when cold

It could be anything from sensors to air lines or other things. How about giving a little more info on what it does/doesn't do, cold/hot and what you've checked/had checked so we can help. If I can be of assistance, be glad to do it.
well it seems to only die and run ruff when you first start it when it's cold. i changed spark plugs and that made no difference. i cuold not see any air hoses off.

At one point the AIC (air idle control) on our 1992 explorer gave out. This meant that when we started it when it was cool out that it would barely idle (if that) or stall. If I kept it running by playing with the throttle it would start to work after it warmed up.
To check the AIC you can try these two tests.
The first is to start and warm up the vehicle. Now turn on the AC. The idle shoudl pick up slightly (not drop). If the idle only goes down when the AC is turned on the AIC may be bad.
The other test is to start and warm up the vehicle. Now remove the plug from the AIC. If the idle changes the AIC was working (or at least working somewhat).
The AIC is on the right side of the plenum held on by 2 10 or 8mm bolts. There is a single plug on it.
If you want to try to clean it, take it off and then take the 2 screw out of it that hold it together. Now use Carb cleaner or other cleaner to clean it out. Once it is dry put it back on. If this helps you will still need to replace the AIC as this cleaning is only a temporary fix.
I am also assuming this is a 4.0l OHV not a SOHC motor.
