First off, I'm new to posting on here so hello to all  I've been a member for a little while but never really posted... just used it as a source for information.

Second, I realize there are exhaust threads and have searched them, so please don't go recommending me to other ones unless it answers what I'm looking for to the T. And if you do find it, I appreciate it greatly :)

That being said, here's my situation. My goal this summer is to mod my x to help save some MPG's. I've been following a few threads for ideas (especially Aldive's quest for 30+ MPG http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44372&highlight=quest ) and among the mods I want to make, exhaust is going to be one of them.

The goal for me is to find an exhaust system set up for my '00 4.0 SOHC that

1) performs well,
2) sounds decent (as low and deep as possible for a V6), and
3) is somewhat cost efficient

I asked a few shops I trust around here about it, and while they have ideas on what to do they are unsure of the "best" set up.

If any one has input on this (as well as pictures, movies or sound clips) please share. Thanks all!

I would recommend a custom cat back with 2 1/2 inch pipe and a Flowmaster 70 muffler.

I have that exact setup and make over 200 RWHP as well as get over 30 MPG on the road.

Good luck ...

Is that dual in/single out or did you run a Y pipe to single in/single out?

Ok I fought this argument for 3 months on what I wanted to do and heres what I have and it sounds like a V8 isn't obnoxious. Buy a flowmaster 50 SUV from advance auto under 100.00. removed the muffler and the resonator. Run 2.5 in tailpipe back have them cut in front of the muffler its stainless from there up and should be left alone those pipes will fit into ur flowie. go online theres only one part thats dual in single out thats the one i have and i put a nice chrome tip welded on the end once u have it on a few weeks it really starts to sound nice with a good intake kit and possibly 1 mpg maybe 2 I'm not overly concerned when I'm gettin 20 mpg out of a 4wd. Good luck bro... Btw not ricey sounds at times just a tad like a mustang!!! not to brag but you will be happy pm me if you need me to send u a clip bro.. best of luck for less then 200 bucks can't be beat:salute:

sounds like a possibility, how's it sound inside the truck?

Try MAC typically they flow more than Flowmasters.

I've heard that, but I've also heard they're bad about cab noise. Or at least that's what I've read from other posts searching around. I know with the flowmaster 50 series or 70 series the tone in the cab is tolerable or comfortable. I drive back and forth 6 hours to school so I would like to avoid unwanted induced headaches

I would like to go with a flowmaster because everything I've read on the forums suggests a fairly high satisfaction with them. And to be honest, I haven't heard too many things bad about them.

Anyone else know about other brands? Gibson, Magnaflow, etc

I bought the borla cat back and have been pleased. My main use is trailer towing, the Borla has a bit of a resonance problem but the performance and fuel economy increase has been worth it. Borla sent me a venturi to put in front of the resonator and this helped greatly, I get about 15 mpg pulling a 25 ft Aerolite in overdrive at 65 to 70 mph. Also a k & n filter, no air silencer, modified air box and bigger mass air, and front drive shaft removed. also 3.73 gears.

The noise level is very low in mine probably not as good as Aldive's 70 but I got some youth n wanted people to know my ex isn't the run of the mill deal. A tip actually enhanced slightly. And the cold air intake has ALOT to do with how your engine sounds down to the filter itself. an open end cone filter will whistle at low rpms mimicing a turbo and a closed end one will flat out growl... something to think about more the filter space the better the flow + the quieter it will be. Avoid ebay cheap **** maf adaptors unless u get the piping included

We have the EXACT same setup right down to the chrome tip. i have the volant intake, what do you have?

i ran my flowmaster without a tailpipe for about 3 weeks and the interior resionence was unbearable but as soon as i put that 2.5in. pipe on it made a WORLD of difference, you can hear the muffler still inside the cab but its really quiet, kind of nice actualy. i've wondered though if i should have gone with a 2.75 or a 3 in. pipe because the 2.5 lost a lot of that deep growl i had at idol. it's pretty quiet at idol. i have a clip on youtube.com of my flowmaster 50 before i had the tailpipe installed, search for aeaglenfitch.

by the way this setup sounds GREAT. it's not a v8 but it still sounds pretty damn nice. gotta love that flowmaster sound! :D

my intake whistles at idol and it's a closed end.

You get that whistle too!? I never did until I flow'd mine now I do my buddy turned his head he thought he heard a lil non natural aspiration goin on... Haha cheap way to sound likea turbo I suppose! I dunno but I kno without that damn resonator people are turnin heads when they see my big black bit*h commin, plenty of people have asked if it was an 8 heres another thing.. It gets louder, dont' ask how a non packed muffler does but it got alot louder and the ratio's all changed becuase i scanned it and now its lookin to be runnin more efficiently. Can't be any happier I messed with dynomax and all those others with my old ex and never was happy... Now I'll keep this till it rots off or I blow up my truck

I have a custom cheap intake... I'm getting a camera so I'll take some pics of my truck I'm going to make a cardomain soo I have something to show you guys

I have the 40 series flowmasters on my 01 sport and it sounds real loud and deep.

I have single in and dual out and i paid like 375 for it and i love the way my explorer sounds.

Do you have dyno results to back it up.
