Here is the rundown of my Explorer/Escape/Ranger experiences:

~In my old '95 Explorer 2wd, OHV 4.0L V6, 4R55E automatic, I averaged around 15 city and 17 highway (low/high of 14/18).
~In my 2004 Sport Trac 2wd, SOHC 4.0L V6, 5R55S automatic, I average around 17 city and 20 highway (low/high of 15/22).
~In my old 2005 Escape 2wd, 3.0L V6, CD4E automatic, I averaged about 16 city and 19 highway (low/high of 15/23).
~In my 2004 Explorer 4x4, 4.6L V8, 5R55W automatic, I average about 14 city and 18 highway (low/high of 13/18.5).
~In my old 1993 Ranger 2wd, 3.0L V6, A4LD automatic, regular cab/short box, I averaged about 12 city and 14 highway (low/high of 11/15).

And just for kicks a couple of my other recent vehicles and toys:
~In my 2001 Silverado 2500HD 4x4, 6.0L V8, 4L80E automatic, regular cab/long box, I average about 13 city and 15 highway (low/high of 11/18).
~In my old 2005 Silverado 2500HD 4x4, 6.6L diesel V8, Alison 1000 5-speed automatic, crew-cab/short box, I averaged about 17 city and 20 highway (low/high of 16/22 - the mileage hardly varied loaded or unloaded).
~In my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4x4, 3.8L V6, 42RLE automatic, I average about 16 city and 18 highway (low/high of 15/19).

Mind you all of these are all hand-calculated and logged mileages. I've found with most of these that if you stay at 65mph or less on the highway, the gas mileage improves greatly.

I would say anyone getting over 20 is driving a 2 WD. My 4X4 '02 with 225k miles gets around 18 on the highway and 14 to 16 around town. Has never varied by much. I can take it easy and drive like an old man (which I almost am :D) and get 21.5 on the interstate without many hills.
Friends V8 does the same.

These trucks are very sensitive to driving habits.

My 04 Mounty 2WD 4.0 /w tune-up and 38psi in the tires will easily get north of 20 cruising at 70mph. With cruise control I can get a little over 400 miles out of a tank of 89 octane.

In city driving I get 14-15 because I'm type-a and do lots of rabbit starts from red lights and stop signs.
