Hi, I have a 98 4.0 sohc, just after starting the truck, if you give it about half throttle or more, it kicks in the 4 wheel drive. Why would it do this? What makes the 4 wheel drive kick in? I thought it was wheel spin. Thanks.

This is the way I understand how my 4x4 work. There are two speed sensors on the transfer case on my 95, one underneath the shift motor and one just above the oil filler plug. They are there to determin the speed different between the front wheel and the rear wheel. Varies amount of torque is applied to the front wheel depending on the speed different between the front and the rear wheels.
If you jam the throttle half way down on start, the rear wheel may turn a little faster, ever if you can not feel the wheel spin ?

I think hes on the right track, after hooking up my switch to the "brown wire" for my auto 4x4, I was quite surprised when it would apply more power to the front. Good peace of mind in the rain ect. tho.

I understand what your saying, but it only happens just after I start the truck, it wont happen any other time unless i am spinning. Thanks for the replies.
