Doing plenty of deep reading into these things for my own sake (halfway through the 4405 rebuild diary) I'm still left with some questions. I am aware the shift motor is out of the question because it only handles the hi/lo change. Not the 4x2 to 4x4.

I haven't had this vehicle long, about a month or so. I vaguely knew of the A4WD system beforehand so when I went to check it out (before I bought it) I spun the front driveshaft by hand with the engine off, spun fine, no issues. IIRC that would mean the TC switch is in A4WD or the TC is accepting those parameters from the computers anyways.

I tested 4Hi in a small mudpit and it seemed to work just fine. Disengaged after the pit and drove away, no funny noises or anything. I didn't go WFO through the mud either.

After noticing some MPG loss and very slight binding I got curious and got under the vehicle, attempting to spin the front DS again but it's locked and engaged as if in 4Hi. Spinning w/ the rear driveshaft too, so it's clear the TC is locked. I've done the BWM and it behaves the same with the switch on or off. I've never touched 4Lo, don't really plan to either.

I've read disconnecting the battery for awhile could fix it, but it didn't seem to in my case. I've also read about engaging and disengaging 4Hi while traveling in reverse, I've yet to try this.

Lastly I've also read of the electromagnet clutch getting seized/stuck into position, which would require a whole TC replacement.

I'd go through all of the stuff the Previous Owner had said but I always let the vehicle do the talking. He said 4x4 worked fine for him. Perhaps I'm just asking for a 2nd opinion? Preferably one with a little more knowledge and experience than mine.

Thanks in advance.

Somewhat solved.

Removed front driveshaft to learn the TC output spins freely. 𝙿̷𝚛̷𝚘̷𝚋̷𝚕̷𝚎̷𝚖̷ ̷𝚕̷𝚒̷𝚎̷𝚜̷ ̷𝚒̷𝚗̷ ̷𝚏̷𝚛̷𝚘̷𝚗̷𝚝̷ ̷𝚎̷𝚗̷𝚍̷ ̷𝚘̷𝚛̷ ̷𝚑̷𝚞̷𝚋̷𝚜̷

Edit: I have a mental deficit, the front end is live. Thanks Mbrooks420

I hope this helps someone out.

You don’t have locking hubs, they are solid and spin 100% of the time. The entire front drivetrain is live. You shouldn’t be able to spin the driveshaft.

Yeah, I'm coming to that conclusion. Information is vague about the system and which years had what exactly. So I removed my front DS for no reason. Oh well. I didn't buy the vehicle for 4x4 anyways. I'll throw it back in whenever I feel like it.

I could have sworn when I went to look at the vehicle the front DS spun freely. Maybe just my memory failing me, the last 3 numbers in your username are to blame. o_O Edited my post.
