I have a 98 explorer with a Borg Warner 4405 - F87A transfer case. What are the differences between the F87A vs the F77A vs the XL24? Can I replace my F87A with a XL24? If so, does it involve much extra effort? My wife is about to divorce me if I dont get it out of the driveway, and I need to replace the tc to do so, lol. I have a line on a reasonably priced XL24, but will pay the extra cost for a F87A if necessary. Thanks!!

Same question

I have a 98 Sport that I recently purchased that won't go into 4x4. The transfer case motor will allow the t-case to go into low and high but the front drive shafts will no engage. My t-case is the f87A-7a195-ca. I made a trip to the local salvage yard this past weekend and found a f77a-7a195-ga and a xl24-7a195-aa, which were both supposed to be used in the 1998 but they don't show as a direct interchange. What is the difference and will they work with any simple mods?

Any help would be appreciated. Trying to get things in order before the Ohio snow hits. It's the second week of November, I'm surprised we haven't had 2 inches yet.

XL24 vs F77A vs F87A

Firstly I am not a car expert so I recommend you double check the info I provide, but here is what I found out when I had my problem. There were 3 models used, the XL24, F77A, and F87A. The differences reflect design changes to accomodate new sensors etc. For example the F77A had a speed sensor, but then it was moved to the rear and the F87A did not. So if you replace a f77a with a f87a you will have a dead speedometer. In your case you want to do the reverse, but not sure if it will fit due to the sensor.maybe it can be removed, but I do not know. My understanding is that the chain used was also different. I recommend you get the proper f87a as i did to avoid potential hassles. Are you sure the issue is the transfer case and not the electric 4WD motor? Hope this helps. Cheers! Gary

Thanks for the tips.

The motor is engaging all the way into low. This is evident by the low gear ratio it goes into. The problem I'm having is that there is no wheel spin on the front tires......nothing at all.

I put it on 4 jack stands this weekend and when in high or low and in drive, the right front tire will spin but not consitantly, the drivers side does nothing.

If I put it in reverse the left front wheel will spin in reverse and the right front wheel will also engage.

Any help is appreciated.
