4r44e or 4r55e?

what transmission do i have? there seems to be differing views and limited information.

what makes my truck have a vs. b? some of the info i have found says i should have a 4r44e, however i have heard that they were not in a 4.0 vehicle, but were in a 3.0l which the explroer never had.

also there was talk of the 4r55e having 100 more ft/lbs torque handling capacity?

what is interchangeable in these? can i run a 4r55e EPC in a 4r44e transmission or vice versa?

my truck is a 1996 ford explorer, 4x4, 4405 control trac tcase, 3.73 lsd diff, 4 speed. i have verified i have a green epc

Yours came from the factory with a 4R55E. The 4R44E was used in 2.3 and 3.0 Rangers. The 55E has a higher input torque capacity than the 44E (550 lb-ft vs 440 lb-ft) and it was the only 4 speed auto used in 4.0L Gen2 Explorers. Sorry, I don't know which internal parts interchange.

The bell housing, output shaft with a heavy duty snap ring (4.0L), valve body ball configuration, and torque converter are different on the 3.0L version than on the 4.0L version. The 4x4 version has a different extension housing.

if i go to www.transmissionpartsusa.com and look up the green epc, it says it is for the 4r44e?

i do indeed have the green epc, i saw it when i did my tranny pan drop last saturday

i would like to replace the epc, however, i am not sure if i replace it with another green one, or if i get the red one?

according to their sale page, the red one is the one i am supposed to have if i have a 4r55e

yes, but according to the rest of the description, the green one is for the 4r44e


if i were to replace my epc, should i replace it with a green or a red? does it matter?

also, i plan on doing the valve body upgrades, factory ford fixes, a boost valve, and the shift kit, i can use the issues addressed in glacier991'ss 5r55e valve body rebuild diary, right?

brooklynbay, it still seems very inconclusive, they say you shouldn't put a green one ionto a red equipped truck, but says nothing about the erverse, or i missed it.....

Allbert feels that it may be possible to put a red one in the place of the green one, but he didn't say that you should. He asked if anybody has done this before. His new design could replace both, but is similar to the red one.

im a bit worried.... but, it sounds liek the green one in a red truck is supposed to be to sporadic, but sounds liek the reers may allow the transmission to be smoother... which would be good
