Greetings,

New to the board...just purchased a 95 Explorer (today) from a Goverment auction...haven't even seen it yet. I'm writing from St. Louis but the explorer is on St. John in the USVI.....where the part you need is never in stock! I'm heading back to St. John in a week. The vehicle was advertised as "no reverse" with 31K miles.....keep in mind that would be like 100K or better stateside...but when I spoke to the custodian of the sight he stated that reverse was slipping...all other gears are reported as ok....but can't say for sure about first. I have read several post on here and cannot tell you if it has low gear or not until I get there. Given the lack of parts there and the time factor to get them I'm wondering what the possibilities are. I see that reverse servo o-rings and the servo itself are often culprits but from what I've read that is coupled with no manual first. I know nothing of auto trans btw. I've also seen that it can be the reverse band, shift linkage etc. I'm wondering if someone could review best to worst case scenerios and if you were going to bring some parts that could be installed without droping the trans what would you bring? I should say that I only paid $500 for the vehicle and that decent cars are in short supply there....to have one shipped cost $1000 and 17 cents a pound road use tax.....so a $500 explorer with a trans problem was a deal but really can't afford to pay for a rebuild. I see used sets of solenoids on ebay but don't know if the reverse has one or if those are for just forward gears. I am going to grab a trans manual from ebay s well. We also have a western auto and I will try to get the codes checked. Beyond that any advice to a novice would be appreciated. Please let me know the most likely suspects in your opinion....I'm assuming they changed the trans filter but maybe not....could it be that simple? Also, could someone direct me to checking the trans electrical if you think that could be an issue...specifically for reverse. Flying blind here but know what it took to get a starter for my Dodge van and want to be prepared when I arrive. Thanks in advance!
