1996 Ford Ranger
Hello i am new to the forum , i have a 1996 ranger with a v8 swap from a explorer and has the stock explorer 4 speed aod. Ive had the truck for about a week and its been running perfectly, but a couple days ago i took it offroading (it has long travel beams and kings all around for those interested) and it ran smooth and on the drive back home i stopped at a gas station to air up my tires and when i went to turn on my truck it clicked and didnt start, the battery is in the back and the cables had just came loose so i fixed that and continued to drive home, still running flawlessly. Then i got home put it in park but didnt turn off the truck and took off the spares from the back, when i got back into the truck and put it in drive it all began lol. It was in 2nd gear trying to take off but i thought i was slipping from getting hot or low fluid so i check the fluid its good and i let the truck cool yet it still continued to have this problem. Basically my problem is when i turn off the truck And put it in drive it takes off fine from 1st then shifts to 2nd fine but once its in second gear it wont shift down or up, but i can manually shift 1-2 without problems, but when i try to go to 3-4 by shift it from 2-D it stays in 2nd. After having this problem for a couple hours it began to work again and ran flwalessly but when i got home and parked it ans turned it on to drive it again it continued to have the problem and i got a CEL ( i didnt have any CEL when it first began this) the code is a p1000 , i got i cleared but did nothing, my OD light is not flaahing and i have no codes but everytime i connect the scanner i get the p1000 which is incomplete monitor or battery disconnect . I checked all the electrical everythings good. Im thinking its a shift solenoid gone bad putting it in limp mode , but then again my od light isnt flashing so it just might be stuck in limp mode? but id like to have more insight on my problem, thanks in advance

yep I have a 98 merc mout that is stuck in second no o/d light blinking but has shift solenoid codes and tcc codes I don't now where to start it has 230k on keep it or scrap its been off roaded a lot but runs awesome

I did this moring when its cold it shifts fine after it warms it is stuck in 2nd gear ammco wants to do a hole rebuild at about 2200 bucks which I don't have. its throwing tcc codes and a and b shift solenoid codes even when its cold but shifts after 15miles it locks in 2end any help will be great.

went and bought the tcc and shift solenoid well update it tomorrow after they get installed found that the ohms where way high on both supposta be 24.9 to 29.9 on shift solenoid and 1.1 to 1.9 on tcc mine are 59.3 on the b side of the shift solenoid and 69.8 on the tcc fingers crossed hopefully my Mounty will be back out burning rubber tomorrow afternoon

well no good news I have to wait tell Thursday for tcc to come in installed shift solenoids and not much new still no 1st gear have 2nd will now shift to 3rd but wont hold it not slipping really I think its internal or a converter I hate transmissions this morning any Ideas
ps installed new tps still nothing

I feel your pain. I too have a 96 Ranger I swapped a explorer powertrain into. My 4R70W worked good for about a minute and is now doing weird things...I think I am going to swap out all the soleniods and see if that helps. Any good write ups on that?

I don't think so?? I have had mine for 4 years and Im going to do the 5 speed swap I love my old merc so I think its time 5 speed mountaineer watch out!!!! Im going to try and ditch the awd for just 2 I just don't know what IM going to use as a drive shaft?

well its not a 5 speed swap yet found a used auto for 200 bucks threw her in back to normal not shutters and all my gears. If it throwing shift solenoids or improper gearing codes start looking for a good tranny man or a bone yard trans I was stuck in 2nd gear for 2 weeks going to start collecting parts for a 5 speed swap an maybe my 347 motor that's been on shelf for a few years
