4th gen rotors on a 3rd gen

has anybody put on rotors from a 4th generation on to a 3rd generation. the part numbers are different. the only difference I can see is that the 4th gen is 4mm (1/16") thicker.

Why bother? And if the disk is thicker, the 3rd gen calipers may not retract far enough to fit around the pads and disk...
