tell him to change out the fluid in the transfer case. If that doesnt work it could be the switch, wiring, or something internal in the t-case or the front diff.

As I recall, the '95-96 Control Trak had 2WD, 4WDAuto, and 4WDLo as options. The 4WD Hi (locked transfer case) didn't come until the '97. Still, if he was in 4WDLo, the transfer case would have locked there, so likely it is a problem with the front differential. The '95-96 versions had a drive disconnect in the differential that was operated by an air-solenoid, I think. If that came loose you would never get anything but 2WD no matter what the transfer case was doing. By '97 they left the front axle connected to the drive shaft all the time and eliminated that disconnect.

he has the vacuum disconnect front axle if it is a 1995 , i would say that the vacuum lines to the front differential may have been disconnected,,
Easiest way to figure out if that is happening is to turn on the heat, put it to the floor setting, than switch it back to the defroster, if it does not change than the vacuum lines are off the front diff, slide under on the passenger side and check them.
if they are on the diff than follow them up and see if they are attached to the vacuum reservoir by the battery, it is the round globe ,

dude how did you figure out that heater trick haha
