4x4 engaging

I have searched threads, but not quite found similar issue. 04 explorer, under normal driving conditions in 4x4 auto, every now and then acts like left front is engaging in 4x4. 4x4 light does not come on, however if I engage the 4x4 high then disengage it, vehicle comes out of the problem for a short time. I heard the 4x4 module is integrated into the pcm on the 04 and 06 model, so I cant unplug it. Does this sound like a pcm issue? Or, maybe the 4x4 motor not working properly?

i have a 02 4.0, i had an issue where the 4x4 would engage going up any kind of hill while driving on the 4-lane. not sure if it was a module issue or sensor issue, but i ended up doing the bwm by wiring a switch into the power wire to the transfer case. 4x4 works when i need it, its turned off when i dont
