4x4 is not engaging, any input?

On my '98 sport, which has bout 50k miles on it, the dash lights for the 4x4 high and 4x4 low flash 5 times every two minutes. I tried to put the truck in both high and low 4x4 after noticing the flashing dash lights, but the gears never engage. If anyone can shed some light on the situation as to possible causes or solutions, it would be very much appreciated.
