Hey guys,

About 2 days ago my 04 started doing something really strange. I was driving and noticed that the 4X4 High light came on and started blinking. Worried that I had accidentally pressed it, I pulled over, put in Neutral and pressed the 4x auto, the light when off and I thought this was the end of it. However, a little later I was driving again and the ABS light came on and the 4x4 high started blinking again. A little later I was pulling out of a parking lot when I turned I could hear the 4x4 locking in and the light blinking again. I was wondering what could be the issue? Is one of the rear speed sensors making the 4x kick in or what? Anyone's help would be really great.

Thanks.
Joe

Fyi from 4hi to auto you don't even need to stop...
Sounds like a abs sensor(also used as speed sensor) going bad(tellin truck wheel is slipping thus engaging 4hi)
Check how many times the abs light blinks when started and we can go from there....
I.e. blink blink blink pause blink blink blink then ON IS CODE 33...

It's that or maybe but doubtful the 4x4 control module...

Btw welcome to the forum!

Thanks man, Would the code 33 signal as the abs speed sensor?

Ok I fired it up and drove it around and it flashed 4 times then 4 more times then stayed on. I suppose this means a 44 code? If so could you help me in figuring out what this code is? I would like to have to spend money only one time and replace only one thing.

Thanks for any of your help.

Well after doing some research.....I think I have figured it out. The other day I had to have a rear tire replaced. When the tire guy ( I refuse to call him a tech, cause if he knew he what he was doing I wouldn't be having the problem.) jacked up the rear he used the rear differential as a jack point. Little does he know (or did I till now) there is a speed sensor on top the diff, when he jacked it he crushed the sensor. I suppose I will be buying a new sensor (49.95) tomorrow and replacing it, cause of that wonderful sign they have that covers their ass. "NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSE TO VEHICLE DURING TIRE CHANGE." I bet they won't get this one over on me again!

If it were my vehicle, sign or no sign, I'd be in that tire shop speaking to the store manager about paying for that speed sensor repair, since they damaged it through their own negligence, by jacking up your Explorer at the wrong jack up point for your truck. The "tire jockey" who replaced your tire should know what specific points on a specifc vehicle are safe jack up points. Why should you pay for their negligence and stupidity? That sign they have up is shady and absurd! It's like a license for their employees to damage your vehicle and get away with it. In 35 years of driving and having my vehicles worked on in numerous shops in my area, I've never seen a sign like that in any of them. I've seen signs like "not responsible for lost or stolen items left in vehicle" while your vehicle was at the shop overnight and some crook broke into it while it sat on their lot, but none like that. I would speak to that manager and see what he says and if he doesn't pay for the sensor repair, blow them into the "Better Business Bureau" and let him know you are going to do that. Also, you might want to check the torque on the lug nuts to that wheel the tire jockey replaced, because you can be assured he over tightened them with his air gun. Good luck with the sensor.
