Does your "X" have the "Auto-shred" hubs on it? Ours did this until I replaced them with a set of manual lock outs. The Autohub on the drivers' side had worn out the "cam" that engaged the rest of the hub, so it would "slip" and you would hear a "pop" or "thunk" in the front end. The final straw was when I had to pull my 84 BII in to the barn, and the frikkin' "Autoshreds" said screw it. I ended up with NO front axle pull in the middle of a muddy spot. $140 later, no more weird sounds/lack of movement.

no there manual but i did pack them with grease

You might want to pull them back off, and remove most of the grease that you put in. Mine were greased from the Factory, and haven't been an issue. I have read that too much grease can cause as many problems as not enough grease.

i think thats only a prob with auoto hubs not sure

i hope thats it ive got too replace the roters anyways. anybody else got any ideas

They're not supposed to be packed with grease.

Swap the hubs left/right and see if you find a change in behavior. May take you somewhere. I could see a bad spindle bearing doing this, though it is rare for them to fail, or a missing spindle washer and/or c clip.

Also, think in terms of wheel torque on the assembly, and a lot of suspension parts can do this too. A bad ball joint could do this, I think.

by bad spendle bearing you mean the axle bearings or one in the hubs (if there is one i dont recall seeing one) the the lock wrings and spendle nuts on the hub are all there ive had it apart before i only stuck about a table spoon of grease in the hubs i put new axles in it from a ranger i believe it was a 93 ranger ill have to check

axles where from a 91 ranger

still should be a washer and clip around the end of the axle.the 91 ranger was a d35 right not a d28?

ya theres a washer and c clip on them

Theres no abs. Ya they are there(clip and washer) the axle code is d4. The bearings are going bad i greased them when i changed the axles

Did the new 'U' joints for the Axles come with Zerk fittings? Some Joints offer these grease fittings for the axle But they will not fit without hitting the housing. Look at teh new 'U' joints for fresh scratches from rubbing.
It does sound like an Auto Hub issue but you have Manuals.
