So I got a 92 XLT.

My new problem is 4x4's not working. At all. When I press the buttons on the dash I hear no noise, and no lights come on. First I went to the shift module and made sure it was working.

Did the test and the LED flashed four times. Next I crawled under the vehicle and tried to rotate the front axle shafts... I can't turn them at all... I don't know if this is normal, but a lot of write-ups said to turn them forward until the hubs engage. I started to think I was already in 4x4.

I pressed the 4x4 button one last time even though nothing happened and I backed down the driveway. When I stopped I heard a bit of a clunk from the front end. I didn't wanna crawl underneath the truck on a slanted driveway so I drove into the garage and there was still no change.

Now I have a few questions about what to do next. The ONLY thing I know that works is the shift module. What is the easiest way to check that the buttons on the dash are even working? After this I will take off the shift motor and clean that out.

Now my last question is...Say everything is working except the shift motor. When I press the button should I still hear a clicking or w/e sound from the shift module? Or will the shift motor send a signal back to the module and shut everything off before it even makes a sound?

Thanks. Matt

Well, if it's just the shift motor crapped out, you should hear a "clicking" from the relays, they are located behind the drivers side wheel well and that's where the clicking should come from. When my shift motor was out, mine clicked about 6 times for every button press. There was no problem hearing it from the cab for me. If no relay clicking I'd say your problem lies somewhere in the buttons or the 4x4 computer.... that's from what I've read on here.
