I have 2000 Explorer 5.0 AWD and it's throwing a 401 (Insufficient EGR flow) code. Does anyone have any step by step troubleshooting procedures? PICS would also really help. thanks

The first thing you need to do is make sure the egr is opening. You can do that by putting a piece of vac hose on it and drawing lightly with your mouth while the engine idles. The engine should stumble.
Most times, it's the DPFE that is the cause of the problem. Search DPFE here and you will get a ton of info....
The 96 doesn't have a DPFE, it has an internal EGR. This means there's no EGR tube going to the exhaust manifold. I don't know about the 2000, but the 96 is a little tight getting off. I cut off a wrench to get mine off as there's very little room..... On the 96 there's a sensor that fastens to the top of the egr that causes problems. It's like a 25 dollar part...
