Hey guys,
i need a dual exhaust on my 5.0
I want an exhaust that has low interior resonance, and a good V-8 sound on the outside. the interior resonance is my main concern..i had a borla cat back on my old 4.0L and it was loud enough for me.
i want to run dual 2.5" pipes both exiting side by side on the passanger side.
First question...based on what I'm looking for, what muffler(s) do you guys suggest?
Second question: does anyoen have sound clips of dual systems on their V-8 or do any of you live in west or central Michigan, northern Indiana or Illinois? I drive from grand rapids to northern IL every weekend, and would be interested in hearing someone's dual V-8, if you think it sounds the way I want mine to sound.

Thanks

i have sound clips but i have way too much resonance for your taste so they don't help.

i think you should get a magnaflow muffler with dual in and dual out like i have but run the pipes out the rear. the resonance in mine is bad because its turned down at the muffler

If you run duals split out the back (either side of spare tire), it will be quieter than running them out the side.
I say this because I run duals split out either side and its the opening under the side panel that seems to make it loud. Pop the inside plasitc panels off and you have a hollow area with just bare metal, versus the carpet and padding of the floor.
I don't know if I'm making sense.
:D

get the Flowmaster SUV 50 series. its a dual in-dual out delta flow, and is actually pretty quiet (to me anyways) on the interior.

your main problem will be mounting 2 mufflers. there just isnt enough room, and turning them on their side is a bad idea (ground clearance issues). whatever you decide on, and dual in/dual out muffler will be your best choice.

I run the dual in dual out magnaflow, it it has very little droan to it. But I woulden't bother running 2.5" unless you are going to do some more serious mods, you'll lose torque.

as tonga stated.. i have a pretty stock 5.0 only intake and apten. and my 2.5 dual in dual out made me lose a bit of torque but maybe gain a few hp in the top end. if your gonna keep your motor stock, go for a 2.25 dual in dual out. i have the magnaflow and love it. stick with 2.25 piping and maybe a 2.5 tip and you should be ok. the flow 50 isnt a bad idea either.

I ment running them out where the stock one is, except adding another.... Not facing out the side, but facing straight back. i just don;t think they can route a pipe out the driver's side because my spare tire is a few inches larger then stock and the tire itself barely fits up in there, let alone an exhaust pipe...

The only mods I plan on doing is a Superchip, larger TB and MAS, and maybe someday the FMS headers...but thats about all I've got plans for. WIth those mods in mind is 2.25 still the way to go? Also is that what the stock muffler inlet is? (just so i know what muffler to buy)

It can be done. It just takes the right installer and the right $$$. My guy did an awesome job. When he finished he said w/ all the work he did he should have charged more.:p

BTW, use the 2.25" piping w/ 3" tips.

forget about the larger throttle body-

1- no one makes one for the 5liter explorer... you will have to adapt one from a stang and its a PITA

2- there is no need unless you are running over 400hp. the stock explorer 5.0 one is a 65mm.

This may be hard to believe, but If you run exhaust straight out the back, exhaust can come in the open sunroof.

what do you mean straight out the back. mine come out below the rear bumper and i dont get any in the sunroof and i drove around with all windows down and sunroof open all summer.

Your best bet i would say is to get the magnaflow dual in dual out which is 2.5 in, 2.5 out, but tell the muffler shop to use 2.25 piping. you can route both exiting pipes over the axle and follow the path of the stock exhaust piping and exit it either straight back with dual tips or to the side. or you can go the route many of us have gone, like myself, or x24 where you route one pipe exactly as the stock, and another over tot he drivers side, over the axle and around the spare to have the tips exit on opposite sides of the bumper. one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. take a look at x24's pictures, or my cardomain siteand you will see how the tips exit.

Well, ford has the exhaust on all 96-2004 Explorers exit straight out the back, so if it does come in the sunroof it must be very minimal. i don;t have a sunroof anyway so I'm not too worried.

yeah, hows that work...stock exhaust is out the back too. i dont think ford would do some thing to kill people

I had a flow 70 series, w/duals on the 96 4.0 and liked it at first but got tired of the droan after 6 mos. or so. I tried a Gibson and it was worse. Thankfully my wife totaled the 96.
So on this one I just removed the resonator and had a Y pipe put in for the duals. Its quiet inside and you can tell its a V8 on the outside. I couldnt be happier.
Email me and I'll meet you in G.R. so you can hear it. Pics in gallery or whatever its called.
