Hello everyone, I’ve got a 07 Explorer sport trac with about 220k miles on the odometer. She’s got the 4.6L engine and with that the 6R60 transmission if I’m not mistaken. The engine has overheated once while I’ve owned it and recently a knock has started.

With that I’m looking to either rebuild, replace or swap the current engine. I recently acquired a 5.4 along with a lightning intercooler and plan to rebuild the engine.

My question really comes in here,

I’m not sure how the transmission will come into play with this, easiest option would be to find the transmission they used in the lighting and call it a day however, I would rather retain the 6 speed transmission I currently have given a proper rebuild/reman

So what would need to be done in order for the 5.4L engine to work properly with the 6R60 transmission from the explorer in the electrical sense? I understand a custom mount and torque converter will be on the list but I’m less understanding in regards to how the engine and transmission will communicate properly.

Any advice in this department will help a ton whether it’s a link to a prior forum or advice

Cheers!

5.4 and the 4.6 are all the same in regards to transmission

Yes it will BOLT together ...but thats all. Lightnings did not have 6 speeds and exploreres never got supercharged. So you will hav quite a mess getting just the Truck to communicate with the Lightning electronics.

superchargers do not have electronics. should be nothing to get a tune flashed to run the lightning motor with the explorer pcm. the TCM is in the trans so you need to do nothing there, it listens on the canbus
