I used to think I was hearing the a/c compressor clutch, but realized today that this noise is coming from the transmission. It's tough to describe, but it's a faint metallic noise, almost like a chain moving or a clutch operating. This only occurs when the vehicle is stopped and in gear, and goes away if I shift to park or neutral. It also varies in volume, as if a cycling action is taking place (which is why I suspected the a/c compressor).

Is this normal TC or pump noise, or something to be concerned about?

Thank you.

What years models did the chain tensioner issue affect?

A chain could be the camshaft chain in the engine, or it could be a chain in the Transfer case. I'll accept your definition, but those are the chains. No chains in the transmission, but a TC issue CAN sound like a transmission issue.

There was a TSB on the chain tensioner, you might poke around using search. I think the TSB was 00M12.

Not sure on the years for the chain tensioner issue, but I should have mentioned that this is an OHV with 126k; 00M12 does not apply in this case.

Is there anything in the transfer case that would be spinning with the vehicle stopped?

I'll do some reading in the transmission diaries to see if I can better understand what is moving inside the transmission with the vehicle stopped in gear. The noise could also be described as a rattle, or rapid ratcheting, like gear teeth clicking past the pawl in a ratchet mechanism.

Thanks for the input, I'll keep studying it. :D

Update:

I looked at this some more today, and found that it is dependent on engine speed. In P or N, the engine idles at about 850 RPM, but in gear this drops to about 750 or so. If I bring the idle in gear up even the slightest bit, the noise goes away. This rules out the transmission for me.

I have ruled out the heat shield, it was loose and touching the exhaust, but not the source of the noise. I'm going to check the catalytic converter shields next, and also the belt tensioner and pulleys.

cc

A catalytic converter with loose baffles can sound like a lot of thinks....jack up the car while it's idling push on the cat with a 2x4 a see if it goes away or you can feel the rattle........
