5r55e - no reverse, help please

hello, the facts! 1998 xlt 4wd 4.0 sohc, 5r553, 147k miles, 1,2nd and drive seem fine (have on jacks) no reverse. I have read many posts and I am hoping it is a blown VB gasket or something I can do without taking out the trans, I am very handy (used to be a certified mechanic), can someone help tell me what I should do? I plan on dropping the pan and changing the filter and fluid this weekend, but while I have the pan dropped, whay can I do to possibly diagnise and fix problem. I have geard reference about blown VB gasket? What do I need to buy from dealer? What is the seperator plate? Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to this forum! Do you have manual 1st? A servo called the low/reverse piston controls the rear band. There is a part inside of the valve body called the reverse modulator spool which control reverse. It could be stuck inside of the bore.
