2001 explorer with 125k on the motor. First trans rebuilt at about 60k under warrenty due to 2-3 flare problem. Taking off from a stop, i'm getting a hesitation like i have a misfire and stumbling that does not smooth out if i go WOT. Seems to be in all gears including reverse. Less noticable in higher gears. Thought it was engine related first, but no dash lights. Happened to turn off overdrive and problem went away. What is my next step to correcting this problem?

if that were true, why would it go away when i turn off overdrive. Also when i rev the engine in park and neutral it is smooth a silk.

The position of the throttle is sent to the PCM to determine what gear it should start out in. Sometimes a dirty MAF could cause this, but start with the TPS first. You could check it with an ohm meter while it sweeps across from one side to another. The dead spot will cause the meter to open the connection suddenly, then make the connection again. You could clean the MAF sensor too.

i'll check that in later to day but i'm still more sure it trans related like the TCC is acting up. thanks for the help. SSCC symptom system component cause

just as suspected tps is fine. swept it with a digital fluke 289 and analog simpson 260. pretty sure i proved the tps was fine as when i tuned off overdrive the problem went away. so any direction would be helpful. also cleaned the maf with isoprople alcohol.

i may drop to pan to see if there is any van body gasket in there, but if none, what would happen if i unplug the tcc solenoid. Is it spring always on and when you hit the overdrive off button then does it energize and redirect fluid flow?

The TCC solenoid is modulated, so it's not completely engaged or disengaged at regular speeds (unless it's at 100% duty cycle, then it's completely engaged). The older A4LD was either engaged or disengaged. The solenoid was a plain on/off design.

So when the shudder goes away with the o/d off, what is the next area to look at?

The overdrive solenoid is also modulated. Both of these solenoids are considered high wear parts because they are modulated. It puts extra stress on the solenoids, and on the valve body bores. It's possible that either the solenoids are starting to go bad or the bores are getting worn, and leaking in certain gear settings.

so next step is dropping the pan and checking the tcc and overdrive solenoids then.

hmm thats kinda what i thought i looked on ebay for the testor the glacier listed in his write up, i have actually used one for another trans before but i could not find one on ebay. I might just order one of those $100 ebay valve bodies.
