Hey everyone. I have a question about my transmission. This may or may not be a problem, I may just be overly critical. I was having the dreaded 2-3 shift flare and overall the tranny just didn't feel "tight" when shifting. I did a valve body rebuild and adjusted the bands while I was at it. The tranny now shifts through all gears like it's brand new. It feels crisp and tight and I have to say that never having worked on an auto tranny before I'm quite happy I could do this myself. Herein lies the problem. Perhaps because of my other problems I didn't notice this, but I'm feeling a slight hesitation when shifting from drive to reverse and vice versa. Also when starting from a dead stop it doesn't feel as crisp/tight as it does through all the other gears. Is this a problem or am I being too critical of my work on a 12 year old tranny with 200k miles on it? Like I said it's very slight and isn't affecting performance but I'm just curious as to whether I should be concerned or not. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Bump, anyone.

Anything from the guru's out there?

O.K. I'm amending my previous question. Before I started my transmission repairs everything was wet under there with remnants of some type of fluid.(couldn't tell type) While I had it all apart replacing the vb I cleaned everything up. Since doing the vb I've been keeping an eye on it, checking for leaks etc. and I found where the fluids are coming from. It's coming from where the tranny meets the engine and a very small seepage from where the bell housing meets the tranny. It appears to be tranny fluid. I'm pretty sure this means either my input shaft seal or the pump seal is leaking. I know that I'll have to pull the tranny for this but I am not sure how big of a job this is. I've gone over this in the ATSG manual and it doesn't look that bad, but having said that we all know sometimes things look easier on paper. If anyone has done this please chime in and let me know what I'm in for. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Anybody?

Still nothin'?

The transmission R&R is the meat of the job, the seal replacement you speak of is fairly simple. Check the torque converter snout also, to be sure you have no groove worn in it. If your truck is high mileage you may consider replacing the converter. If you are replacing the front seal, you should check the bushing there also, and you might as well replace the seal on the pump stator. If you need to replace the pump seal, make sure to replace the o-rings on the bell housing to case bolts. But, where does one stop? If you have the transmission out...

I have the same leak, and have for about 15k miles or so. I never see any dripping fluid, its just always wet and dirty with crude there.

I was thinking that while it was out I would replace the pump assly. I found a rebuilt pump online for $79.00. What do you think? Worth it?

I would think the servos need replacement too...

I replaced my VB with one from Central and while it changed the feel it did not last long...Replacing the O/D and intermediate servos as well as the o-ring on the reverse servo got that firmer shifting feel back for me...

I am going to replace the o-ring on the reverse servo as well. I didn't think of it when I did the valve body. ranger7ltr where did you get the reverse servo seals?

Did you put a shift kit in? A new reverse servo seal comes with the kit, and also wittrans.com has some servo seals separately I think.

No shift kit, but I'll check that site. Thanks

Check wittrans.com

I bought my reverse oring from a local tranny parts shop...

I still think I need to replace the reverse servo with a longer unit...I still have a delay of 3-5 secs from shifting into reverse to engagement...My servo tip is a little chipped though and I believe a longer tip would quicken the band engagement...

I have a slight delay as well. Only a second or so. Do you think I would benefit from a longer servo as well? How would one go about finding said longer servo?
