1998 Explorer Limited
Hi Gang! I'm new to the forum, been a lurker for a while but finally joined not long ago.

My truck is a 1998 Limited, 4-door, 4.0 SOHC, 4x2 with 170,000 miles, maintained religiously.

I just had the Reverse/1st band pop when my Frau was backing up an incline a couple of weeks ago. She said "it sounded like "bang", like I backed into something and then there was no reverse". I started searching around the forum and found what I believe to be the answer: a shot rev/1st band according to most opinions which equals a trans rebuild or replacement. I couldn't find the definitive info I thought I needed, so here I am asking for more detailed info.

I located a low mileage 5R55E removed from a 2001 Explorer 4-Door, 4.0 SOHC, 4x2. I got a really good deal on the tranny but now comes a few questions for you transmission experts.

First off, I asked the dismantler to ensure/verify the tranny would fit my vehicle according to his manuals. He said it would fit and work properly so I bought it sight unseen (w/90 day warranty). With around 43,000 miles on the "new" tranny, I figured I'd probably need to at least change out the external seals since it has sat uninstalled for "a while" now, and change the fluid, filter and whatever else you guys think would be a good idea.

Are there any differences between the '98 and '01 5R55E transmissions?

Does anybody know what filter/kit I need?

What kind/type of fluid and how much (quantity) fluid is needed?

Is it possible to drain the torque converter and if so, how and how do I refill it once it's been drained?

I've read over and over in the forum about the shift issue inherent to the 5R55E's and how a "shift kit" will fix those problems. I need to simply get a transmission back in-the-vehicle so we can resume driving it and maybe install the "shift kit" sometime later when I have more time.

Thanks everyone for any help or guidance you can provide!

Dan
