I need to change shift solenoid 3, but don't know which one it is. O/D light started flashing and engine code P1761 came up. Can anyone tell me which shift solenoids are which?

welcome smartinez

what kind of ride u got

I went look at that schematic and it shows were the solenoids are, but doesn't day which one is the # 3 slenoid. There are 4 soelnoids that all look alike.

This information is from Glacier991's photo gallery:

It shows that item 20 is the shift solenid and req.'s 4, but still doesn't tell me which one I need to change. The solenoids are $70 ea. through ford so I don't want to change all fouur if only one is bad.

I have codes p0751 and p0756 751 is a and 756 is b

smartinez: I would also consider installing a remote trans fluid filter (available at summit racing for $32) There is a good chance that the shift solenoids and VB are contaminated with wear materials... No sense in changing parts onlt to have to do it again later..Also, of course, fluid change and filter.

Good Luck!!

5R55E SET OF (4) SHIFT COAST SOLENOIDS NEW OEM#F77Z-7G484AB

Are these the correct solenoids and should I just replace all four of them while in there.
I am also getting the code P0760, which says shift solenoid three is malfunctioning.

Thanks for the help these forums have been a plethora of information.

I unfortunatley don't have the necessary tester for the solenoid check. The wiring harness is like new, not brittle or anything. I figured for the money $80 for the set of six solenoids "which is different than the one I posted originally" it would be better to just replace them all as they have over 200000 miles on them as far as I know, and have never been changed before. I also have no idea how long it had been before the fluid had been changed either as it was extremely dirty but didn't smell burnt or anything. There was only sludge in the bottom of the pan and no big pieces of matterial on the magnet or in pan.

Can anyone tell me what the shift solenoid three activates inside of the 5r55e. Does it activate clutches or bands or both. If I knew what it actually did, I may be able to better understand the symptoms of what my transmission is doing. It will go into gear and go through shifts and after a short distance it is like it comes out of gear and won't go back in again until I shut the engine off and let everything reset. I am doing the solenoid ohm test and the harness wire continuity test to see what actually is bad, but would just like to know what the solenoid actually controls in the trannsmission.

Thanks

Charles

Ss3

From the Solenoid Application Chart in my ATSG 5R55E manual it looks like shift solenoid 3 (SS3) controls application of the front band. The front band is applied for 2nd and 5th. The ATSG diagnostics state that when SS3 is failed On then there is no 1st, 3rd and 4th. When SS3 is failed Off then there is no 2nd and 5th.

Thanks that helps alot in diagnosing what the tranny was doing. It acts like it has no 2nd to shift into when shifting and sometimes skips to third or just goes limp with nothing like it pops out of gear. I belive it is stuck in the off position, which could mean a problem with the wiring harness and not the solenoid itself. SO, I think I will test the wireing harness first before I pull the solenoid and test it. Thanks so much for the great and fast info.

SS3 PCM control pin

. . . SO, I think I will test the wireing harness first before I pull the solenoid and test it. Thanks so much for the great and fast info.

You may want to test for continuity all the way to the PCM pin (53) that drives the SS3/SSC solenoid. Make sure the pin is not pushed back into the connector and not making contact. Another possibility (although unlikely) is the driver in the PCM has gone bad.

Here's the path for the 2000 Explorer:

PCM pin 53 (pink/black) > C118F pin 10 > C118M pin 10 > 5R55E pin 7 (pink/black)
