I have a 2000 4.0 v6sohc explorer with the 5r55e tranny. I've been having the 2nd to 3rd flare up for about a month now but the other day it got worse. the od light began to flash and about five minutes later, trying to start from a stop sign, it just reved like in neutral, except i got some power to the wheels. every time i turn the car off and turn it back on the flare up is significantly reduced but always comes back. ive done some research that said to replace the valve body, the epc solenoid, the 3rd solenoid and to change the fluid. can anybody narrow that down or tell me which ones i should replace?

If your gonna replace "a few solenoids" you might as well contact donnie @ central valve bodies and get a rebuilt valve body shipped out. Wont be all that much more than reman'd solenoids. And if you go with new solenoids it will run about the same as the rebuilt valve body. And the rebuilt valve body comes w/a 12month unlimited mile warranty. Plus he has great customer service.

Edit, and just to add............ the rebuilt valve bodies from him come w/all the updated and upgraded products to take care of shift flares, epc pressure problems, ect..... all ready to be bolted up. Cant beat that.

Since there are probably a dozen different problems that could affect the valve body (some are as easy as a new gasket) it's a gamble as to what is wrong with your tranny. If you don't want to try a new valve body gasket (and have the possibility of no improvement), then as xploder82 has said don't spend a lot of money on individual parts just get a reman valve body and hopefully your problems will be taken care of (remember it could also be an internal problem but the v/b would still be needed). Whatever you do use an inch pound torque wrench and torque the v/b bolts correctly or you will build in another problem.

It's also helpful to draw a template of the
valve body bolt locations on a piece of
cardboard, and use it to place the valve
body bolts when you remove them.
Poke holes in the cardboard to secure
the bolts.

There are several bolts, and of various
sizes. The cardboard trick keeps them
in the correct location and saves a lot
of time and head-scratching....(did that
bolt go there...???):)
