2008 Explorer XLT 4.0
Im swapping a rebuilt 5r55s from a 2007 explorer limited trim 4x4 with the 4.0 into my dd 2008 explorer xlt trim 4x4 with the 4.0 as well.
Curious if im gonna running into any compatibility issues when i go to swap them, particularly with the ecm/tcm? Will the 2007 5r55s plug and play with the 2008 control module?

I would say yes, they did not change much in those years, but hope some experts will chime in. I dropped a 2007 motor into my 2006 and it was just fine. If you go on car-parts.com, see if they cross reference the years for that tranny.

That seems to be what im seeing. When you go to look up trannys for the 2008 model year, you get results varying from 2006-2008. For some reason it seems that the 2009-2010 4th gens are not considered compatible for some reason. Part numbers don’t seem to be a good gauge of compatibility, from my understanding the part numbers seem to all be different each year.

So decided to go ahead and do the swap anyway, figured my chances of running into any problems were pretty slim.

Tranny from the 2007 ex parts car is in my 08 ex and working flawlessly and went in with no hiccups!

As far as I know 2006-2008 ex 5r55s’s should be interchangeable as long as the engines and the 4x4 options are the same. Can’t speak for 2009-2010 interchangeability with 2006-2008 explorers.

That is good information to know.

I wonder if the 06-08 vs 09-10 comes from the v8 models. On those, they used 2 transmission 6R60 and 6R80 for 09-10.
I don't think the 5R was different in the last years of its life on this generation of Explorers.
Bus still good info, thank for posting :)

Yeah I’m not sure either. My knowledge is the 3rd and 4th gen 5r55s’s are all pretty much the same, but when searching parts stores and part numbers you get conflicting/confusing information. Many parts stores will seperate 06-08 5r55s from 09-10 5r55s and I’m not entirely sure why they do this. I don’t know why the v8 drivetrain would impact the 4.0 drivetrains. The part numbers from year to year are pretty much all different each year as well, so that makes it even more confusing. But even if the trannies are all the same, that never always guarantees they’ll play nice with the computers from model year to model year.

But nonetheless, if you have a tranny from 2006-2008 going in an 06-08, rest assured that they should all be interchangeable and play nice!
