I just got a used '97 Explorer Limited. It is approaching on 60,000 miles. This milestone is oftenly the point where many automotive dealers recommend that their vehicles undergo specific maintenance. Should my Ford Explorer be brought in for certain maintenance procedures at this point?

I wouldn't take it to a dealer if you were able to do most of the work yourself. Something things that come to mind is change the tranny filter, flush it out or atleast change the fluid, oil change, I think the differential may be due as well, plugs, wires. I'm sure others will chime in with more but thats a list to start, you may not need all of them but gotta check first. Any more questions just ask, welcome to the site. Where about in Pike county? I used to live up that way.

Damn 60k, thats just a baby. Don't take it to the dealer unless you have extra money to blow cause they will take you to the cleaners for simple lil projects ;)

So then there are no "scheduled" maintenance concerns at 60k miles?
Can't help but wonder if the dealers would argue....
My last vehicle was an Eagle Talon (please hold laughter).
[That was before I moved to snowy Pennsylvania]
The Talon & other vehicles I've owned all called for a replacement of the Serpentine belt amongst other general upkeep / maintenance issues.
Ford dealers don't recommend that Explorers be brought in for certain maintenance procedures at 60k miles?

Yes Ford does recommend service at 60K.
If you have an owners manual if describes what services are recommended when.
If you don't have a manual, then register over at myford - https://myford.fordvehicles.com/ser...BackToLogin=MyFord/Home/HomePage&ord=15419550
Once all of your info is in, your myford homepage will show you exactly what needs to be done when. I had radiator flush, tranny flush and injectors cleaned (all recommended at 60K) at 70K, all I can say is, it certainly gave back the pep I had lost since buying it, tranny definitly shifted better. I had the belt replaced soon after. Your plugs should be good until 100K, IIRC, the stock motorcraft plugs are the one thing that ford actually did right. You don't have to have these things done at a ford dealer, but you can, it all depends on what you are comfortable with.

UPDATE:
This is what myford recommends for the 60K service (at least for my 2000)........

Present Service: 60,000 Miles

Change automatic transmission fluid
Change engine oil and replace oil filter
Inspect and lubricate steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and, if equipped, half shafts drive shaft and u-joints
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system
Inspect complete exhaust system and heat shields
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses
Inspect wheel ends for end play and noise
Lubricate 4x2 front wheel bearings, replace grease seals, and adjust bearings
Perform multi-point inspection
Replace engine air filter
Replace fuel filter
Rotate tires for optimal tire life

I'm fairly certain that it matches up with whats in the owners manual.
Whether or not you want all of that done, or can do any of it yourself is another matter entirely. I don't have a driveway, so most of the work on my X takes place in a shop.
Good Luck.

Thanks for your help Jim!

Milford A? I used to live right by there, I can't think of the name tho. It was like a development in the woods, we had a gate and all.

i just got mine serviced for the 60K maintenace even tho i have 76K on it and they said it looked pretty good and only needed new spark plugs and fuel filter (since i did a trans flush no less than 100 miles ago and i also changed my oil in october) i took it to Mr Tire for there 15/60/90 Mile Maintenance service.

PS. If you go to Mr Tire they have a $30 off coupon on there website
