I am gathering parts to SAS my 98 explorer with the 4.0 v6. I currently have a complete rolling chassis of a 76 F150. I am using the D44 and suspension parts from it. I will be keeping full width axles.

Is there any reason not to use the 76 F150 Steering box? I am not too worried about packaging/space. It looks like I have enough room to make it work. Are there any weak links or reasons not to use that box that I should know about before moving forward?

I will be extending the radius arms and I have 8 lug outers for the D44. I will be using a sterling 10.25 in the rear as well. It looks like 5.13 gears with 35" tires is the plan for now.

Here is a picture of the 76 f150 steering box.

Well, a ball joint D60 & sterling 10.25 followed me home today. A deal came up on the local classifieds and I had to jump on it. I am happy with the purchase. This makes it so I have 3 vehicles that all use the 8 on 6.5 lug pattern. Here are pics of the axles as well as 2wd 94 f150 leaf springs, 6.5” lift TJ coil springs, BW1354, BW1350 & square tube for radius arms. It is a good start on parts gathering for the build.
