So ive got a 87 ranger 2.9 5 speed. the starter has been grinding for awhile (known problem) and the clutch wines when it is disengaged. I figure ill knock 2 birds with 1 stone and just do the 4.0 clutch swap. Ive read the write up on the ranger station and i was wondering if i would be alright with the 2.9 block plate or do i still need the 4.0? (didnt really understand what it was saying) and if anyone has done this that has a parts list and where to get cheapest parts would be helpful, thanks

I used the 2.9L plate.
You'll have to widen the hole for the 4.0 starter about 1-2mm (I just used a half-moon file, going around it evenly, checking it as I go).

I used a Luk RepSet clutch kit for a '94 4.0L (Ranger or Explorer, take your pick).
LUK pt# 07-096

Put a little extra grease in the TO bearing before you install it (it's open around the center), they don't seem to put enough in them it seems (lithium wheel bearing grease is fine).
