If its your DD I dont think a mini spool is a good idea. I have never had one, so I can't say from experience. A spool basically connects your axles together and both rear wheels turn at the same speed. When you turn a corner, the outer wheel turns faster then the inner, so your tires may chirp or you will fishtail much easier. Just a thought, I'm sure someone else will chime in with more experience with one.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT do the mini spool in the 8.8 with anything over 30's. I went thru 2 of them before I welded it up. First one almost went with only road minles. 2nd one left loose after only 4 months and 1 off road trip. They are not tight enough to stop the play in the side gears. Once it get so loose the cross pin will snap and your screwed.
First on was purchased with my lift and tires. When I called to get my money back they were not going to because I had 34's. They checked the invoice and had too because they sold it to me as a package.
2nd on was a different brand and the people that did the gears and mini said it was better and stronger. When I took it back to them, they said I had to be railing on it for it to be like that.. I don't wheel that way and they knew that.
Almost 2 years later, about 10 wheeling trips and about 7000 miles no problems with the welded 8.8.
why don't you get an automatic locker, like the aussie locker or lockrite? It would be a little more forgiving on the road, and still lock up when torque is applied when you're off road. Many menbers on this site run them and all with good results. they are around $200+
zhanx what gears are in it, I may be interested, mY 96 is more of a play truck but does see street action, Ive used a full locker as well as drove 4 wheelers on the street. does it still have the disks?
