The back is not an option as I need ALL the space,
Also, I don't have back doors. In the Sport, the rear speakers have almost 8" of space behind the panel. Lots of room there. I was just unsure of how to actually go about mounting them.

your idea will work. it won't sound as good as other options to a real imaging geek (but it doesn't matter that much and it sounds like thats ok with you)
you should built them as follows-
first off sound deaden the door for which i recommend regular old peal and seal from a hardware store. next build the box from mdf with tabs as i said above, then just use sheet metal screws to attach it. the sound deadening will help to make the connection tight and problem free etc.. you can get tricky and put a terminal cup on your box directly over the stock hole in the door. attaching the box in this way will work just fine, just make sure you use some sort of sound deadening "gasket" so it gets a good tight fit and doesn't rattle.
anything else you do is up to you. You could do something tricky with the stock speaker grille or replace it or do full on fiberglass doors panel and work the grille in that way.
i know you understand it enough that most of that stuff is obvious to you. I just post it so that someone else can get an idea too if they find this now or later in their own search for info.

That's exactly what I'm saying. That route would be much, much easier, especially if I got the Thunderform with driver and amp installed. But I use my cargo area, so it's not an option.
I am going to pursue this idea, just not right now. First, it's to freaking cold outside. Second, I need to learn how to fiberglass. At least it'll be under the factory grill/panel so it won't have to be pretty!
Why not an elongated box with a single 10 under the back seats? It would take some serious MDF skills but it could be done (I think: I know my 4 door has enough room under it)

Dynomat the entire inside of door. And also dynomat the outside of door that faces passengers. Use a sealant to seal any air leaks I can. Now I'm a little worried about the door handle hardware rattling and any resonance.
I once thought about using the 8's for mid bass. I think I will just stick to the 6.5's for my mid bass. I plan on doing some glassing soon when I get back from Okinawa and I will glass just about everything inside the truck like Expo. I plan on doing one set of 6.5's in each door for a total of 2-6.5's and tweets in each front door.
I want my bass in front of me, where it is SUPPOSED to be. I cannot stand to be in a vehicle where you can tell the bass is coming from behind you. It is wrong musically.

Do they have a seperate stack of subs behind the crowd or are they all up front with the performers? uh huh... thought so.
It should be entirely possible to put an 8" SUBwoofer in the front doors of the explorer. I have JL Audio 8IB4 8" subs in the factory 6x8 locations of my SVT Contour, along with 5.25" point-source drivers in the kick panels. It sounds awesome, as my sig should indicate.

Sports have less room under the rear seats. I don't even think there is room for my 400 watt amp I use for my mids. The rear axle is right under the rear seat. There's about 2 inches there.
There is a ton of room in the side panels though. It's definetly possible. I once lost my reciever hitch b/c it slid forward from the left back compartment to under where the rear speakers are in my sport.
