88 4 banger =500$

Ok just a few days ago somebody I work on the ambulance asked me if I wanted to buy his 88 hatch back 4cyl for 500$. Now it needs shock/spings, and the interior needs to be washed down pretty bad (i can do it myself) now my question is could this car have any potential to be a sleeper? I know it wouldnt with a 4 cyl but with out costing DRASTIC amounts of money could it be done? or should I just say no thanks

There's no possible way to make a import a sleeper w/o spending drastaic amounts. How do you say, they just don't have the potential..

just as an example that we've looked into recently...

2001 mitsu galant for about 8,000 with 100k miles

turbo kit for 4k

380 hp- thast a sleeper for 12k that will really, really surprise some people
 






Wow, what's a Galant run stock, 17 or something? The turbo isn't going to make it amazingly quicker. Sorry but imports shouldn't be considered when building a "sleeper." Sleepers are vehicles that don't look visually quick but are, really quick. I wouldn't buy the hatchback, it would take TONS of money to get it quick enough to be a sleeper, and there probably aren't (m)any aftermarket parts for that $500 4-cylinder anyways.
 






wait a second- you don't think a galant approaching 400 hp will be a sleeper for 12 grand?

what is a sleeper then?

name an american car you can make fast for less money that looks slower than a damn galant. try not to dwell on the 8k asking price here for the galant (tahts just due to the fact that the current body style hasn't been out for all that long, and the fact that we would want some reliability)

to me a galant is a perfect sleeper. its a late model sedan that no one notices etc. isn't that the idea?


also, i can almost guarantee the aftermarket support for the unnamed '88 rice mobile is greater than that for 95% of all american made vehicles. sucks but its true. just because you see idiot kids with slow asian cars everywhere doesn't mean that by modifing them you can't make em fast.
 






probally a CRX....If you wanna a sleeper get a focas! ;) Ford makes a full drop in factory kit so you change it to rear wheel drive with a V8. Now that car would rock! :burnout:
 






Let's see, for $12k. Buy a first gen X and throw a built 5.0 in it. There ya go. I consider a sleeper a car you wouldn't expect to be quick that turns out to be real quick. 17 second to 15 second is a nice drop but that's not sleeper-material to me. Starting at 17 sec and hitting 13 would get me to pay attention. Troll is a perfect example of a sleeper.
 






um right. the point is that troll would cost 100x more for the average person than a galant in the 13s. i don't know why you think a 350-400 hp (depending on tuning etc.) would run in the 15s. they run those stock easily.

nothing wrong with troll, and yeah troll is a great sleeper...

however, its gonna cost 5x more to make a sleeper out of an x than a galant or similar.

hell, i should know i'm actually faced with modifying the darn 302 i didn't even have to swap in and its still gonna end up costing about as much as that turbo kit for the galant to get the same hp levels (and i'll still weigh 2x as much)
 






Buy a first gen for $2k and drop a $10k built 5.0. It'll be much faster than the import.
 






buy a 1990 crx for $500 and drop a 10k honda motor in it and race it against your 1st gen. i hate em, but that'll smoke your heavy ass explorer

If your going to build a budget sleeper you don't want a heavy ass truck. The power to weight would kill you. You'd need twice the HP of a smaller car. Troll is certainly not a sleeper. Sure it's faster than it looks, but he's not fooling anyone. Sleepers don't have a loud exhaust, or any indication that they are fast, except for some slightly wider tires. I assume the hatchback is a lx Mustang. Probably better to find a 5.0 and just debadge it. If it's a Honda, you could swap in a Vtech, and some bolt ons and it would be fairly quick.
 






How is Troll not a sleeper? How many times have you seen a SS Camaro and an explorer stop at a red light and the Explorer smoke it?? Thats a sleeper, the looks matter. He doesn't have crazy wheels or a paint job. Or does he have stickers all over his car.
 












what kind of car is it? dont think that was ever answered, that'll play into your guys arguement, if its say a mustang 4 cyl hatchback, that would be diff than a civic hatch.... :)
