Ok, this is my mother inlaws car. She has owned it since 90 and has replaced the muffler like 5-6 times since then. It has just gone once again. The last time it was replaced was alittle over a year ago.

Same mech has replaced the last three. They're not to sure why it keeps going bad so quickly. One thought was short driving distance. Causing moisture buildup, which isnt escaping.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why the mufflers are going so quickly on this car?

BTW, the cars runs good and there are no other signs leading to a cause that we know of.

You answerd your own question: moister build up of short distance driving., a moister which is very acid. And it seams some cars are more prone than others. We had the same problem with my wifes '86 Mitsubishi Galant. The rear muffler was slightly tilted forward so the water collected in the front corner of it, where it regularly rusted through in about 1 1/2 years.
There were 2 kind of solutions:
- Change to a stainless steel muffler, if available
- Make sure the muffler is, if possible, as horizontal as possible so the water spreads out over the entire muffler and evaporates easier than when it collects in one corner.

if you dont get your problem fixed check out www.tccoa.com great forums....not as good as this one but they are awesome and VERY helpful guys....used their site when i had my cougar a while back

Yup, get a stainless muffler, one that has a flow-through design such as Magnaflow. This greatly reduces the spots water can collect.

Ok great, I just wanted to make sure the problem was just that! For a while it seemed as though it didnt matter what kind of muffler she had on that car...

Thanks guys
