I am having a problem with my 91 Explorer. When you put it into gear, the engine dies. I have been told that it could be the torque converter and the or a problem with the lockup switch. I can get it to work, when I hold the accelerator when I put it into gear, but it shifts funny and has no overdrive. It also makes a strange clunky noise just before it dies.
Any advice in troubleshooting this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Michael

In the first generation A4LD.... two things are controlled by the computer.... the 3-4 shift (or OD shift) and the torque convertor lockup. It sounds like you may have some electrical problem causing the convertor to stay locked up (which would be like starting an engine with the clutch engaged, or popping the clutch at idle) and the lack of OD could be related to a wiring harness problem, or something similar.

Check your harness to make sure it isn't shorted somewhere.
