91 rear pass door handle won't work

For years the rear passenger door handle hasn't worked. It moves freely but doesn't release the latch. Exterior handle works fine, although requires a lot of pull.

I've got the the panel off ready to replace the cable window mechanism with an arm-type from Kbabiak and figured this is the time to finally fix the latch. Every thing appears to be connected from the handle to the latch (from what I can see and having no schematic).

Has anyone had this interior latch problem that can give me some pointers? Thanks.

It's a common problem.

The Front Passenger and the Rear Driver use the same interior handle. Just as the Front Driver and the Rear Passenger use the same handle.

There is a little plastic gear that operates the actuator rod. The teeth on the gear break easily.

Get one from a Junkyard Most of the time the door panels are already off, and it is just 1 or 2 phillips screws holding it in.
