That does not look right at all--
how would the tool even fit? Unless you have the tool for it also--

The sensor on left will block the hall gap for half a revolution, where it looks like the one on the right will do 1/4 revolution. It may possibly time the pulse to the same point, and, tighten it up ( Make it of less duration) , but I am not sure about that. I have never seen a flag like that before.

Maybe someone can shed light on this--????

I know the guy to ask--SVO

This is just a guess but I would say where ever you got your CPS form they gave you one for a 1999-2001 engine.

The Tool I have (OTC #6469) states for 1996-1998 5.0 Explorer & Mountaineer which would fit your original CPS.

Earlier 5.0 (96~98) uses a 3-wire Hall Effect sensor; later 5.0 (99~01) uses a 2-wire Variable Reluctance Sensor. The two types of sensor are not interchangeable and require different vane widths and different synchronization tools. The wide vane must be used with the HE and the narrow vane must be used with the VRS. Your 98 PCM is set up for the Hall Effect, so you must use the HE and matching wide vane Synchronizer assembly.

Even though it is more expensive, I would buy only the OEM Ford sensor and/or Synchronizer assy. There are cheaper Chinese knockoffs (Dorman and other brands) but these have caused grief for many owners.

I think I have it figured out. The sensor is the correct sensor, the housing however is for the 99-01 5.0's. I paid 40 for the sensor and housing via ebay, made in china crap granted. But I will end up with the correct housing and sensor from ford for the same 40 bucks...shhhhh... It may not be the 'right' way, but its the only way to afford the outrageous prices they charge at the dealership.

On a side note, has anyone looked at the price for motorcraft plug wires at the dealership for a 98 exp 5.0?? $250 for SPARK PLUG WIRES.. Point made.

The Tool that came with the new sensor/housing, is made for the old sensor (1/2 arc). Thats what threw me off..

You can buy Motorcraft at parts stores or on line far less than the dealer.

I usually by my Motorcraft parts from here: www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=213787 They are close to 1/2 the price on parts as my local dealership.

The synchronizer is just over $103 from the online sources, the 96-98 version.
