Hey all,
I recently replaced all my battery cables (pos, neg and alternator to solenoid) and I have a new AC delco battery. I think I'm experiencing an alternator issue.
After driving for a good long while, I've noticed that the charging gauge starts to creep over to the right hand side of normal. After a while, it reaches all the way past the "L" and the check engine light pops on. The truck runs a bit goofy while this is happening. If I shut the truck down for a little while, it will start back up and the charging gauge is back to normal, and there is no check engine light. I pulled codes, and there were a bunch of "Low Voltage" codes stored such as the MAF, TPS, ect ect. I also have noticed that it appears to have boiled the battery over a couple of times. THe top of the battery was dirty as hell, (before the cable swap) and it was corroding the negative cable pretty bad. I changed that out, and cleaned the top of the battery off real good and dried it. The truck went through its overcharging fit once more after that, and I noticed some leaking acid around the battery cell covers. This is suggesting that my voltage regulator is overheating causing an overcharging situation.
I have very little money for a new alt:
My question is this: Will a second gen OHV 4.0 alternator swap into my 92XLT? I know that the 94 Limiteds came with a 130 amp alt from the factory, and the wiring seems identical to the wiring in my 92xlt. Since the OHV second gens came with what LOOKS LIKE the same 130 amp alt, would this be a direct swap in? I can get a low milage second gen alternator at my local pick-n-pull for next to nothing..... and I just need to make it last until next spring. Is this possible to do?
BTW, I'm running to 55W KC lights, everything else drawing power is stock.
Thanks in advance!
