I have a 92 XLT that is leaking gas pretty badly from somewhere near the gas tank. The gas appears to be running down the side of the tank. It only leaks when the truck is running, and leaks even if there is only a little bit of gas in it. Therefore, I’m assuming it’s leaking from the high pressure line coming from the tank, and not leaking at the top seal or a hole in the tank. Does this sound reasonable?

Can anyone give me an idea of how much work it is it inspect/repair the line? I really haven’t had to mess with any of the fuel systems on my Explorers, so I’m not sure what I’m in for. Also, if I need to replace the line, is it a dealer only part?

Any and all responses are appreciated. Thanks.

leaking at the top of tank

mine was leaking up there it turned out to be the fuel unit on top of the tank it costed me about 350.00 at the shop good luck!!!!!!!!!

Its probably the filler neck. We replaced one on Spas' old 91 Rig. Not hard to do at all.

If it only leaks when the truck is running (but not necessarily moving) then it will be on the fuel lines (either the main or return line)...

You will need to drop the tank to get a good look at it.. but You an lower the tank a bunch without disconnecting the lines and then you should be able to see the leak. If it is hard hard line that is part of the pump, just replace the pump...

BTW.. you will need special tools (not expensive, you can get plastic ones from most auto parts stores) to disconnect the ford fuel lines.
