Even back in the old days of carb vehicles……..there were always mods to be done when swapping……….trans mounts, engine mounts, expanded capacity and radiator placement, kick down levers, A/C plumbing, re-wiring, throttle cables, exhaust mods….etc.

And, today…………besides computer mods.......there still remains the problems of fabrication mods and problems mentioned above, etc........when you swap a V6 for a V8.

Aloha, Mark

PS.......I'm not saying that it can't be done with enough time and money. Though, will it be a "drop in"........I doubt it.

That engine may not be an HO engine. HO is what Ford called their "High Output" 5.0's. If it's not, then it might only turn 160-180 horsepower, which is really not worth the time and effort of putting in your truck.

I was always wondering if you could put a 5.0L engine/trans from an F-150 and adapt the explorer transfercase to it?????

thats ture rhett...but would it fit w/o many mods..like cuting stuff outa the way ect. and hook up with warn 1354 t-case? the engine and auto trans together is only 250.00 cheapest one i found with every thing..thats why im really thinking about it

Well $250 for a functioning engine and transmission seems pretty good, and cheaper than you could get a 4.0 OHV for, most likely. And you would be getting a better transmission. I'd want a HO 302 though, if it were me.

Let's see...You would have to enlarge the tranny tunnel a little, but that can be done with a hammer and some TLC...I believe you will need an adapter for the 1354, you can find out more searching this site. You should be able to keep your A/C and probably even your clutch fan. A 1" body lift helps for clearances but is not absolutely essential.

Fitting the headers might be a problem. Many people must have custom headers made, or use 96-01 Explorer headers with a little modification. You should search here for info on that, because people like 410Fortune have a lot more experience with this particular swap than I do.

Also often the heater box needs to be modified/notched. Again if ya want details you can find them on this site. Search for heater box and 5.0 or 302 or something like that.

Being a 1987 5.0, it is probably speed density or Carb. That's not a big deal, you just need to keep that in mind if you are considering computer chips, and what not.
